The Power of Sharing Your Personal Word of the Year

Choosing a word of the year is a transformative habit. I am sure that you want to share this habit with others. So, sharing your word with others can affect you and them.

Here are some reasons you should share your word with others:

Accountability: When you share your word with others, you publicly commit to use it. This creates accountability and motivation for you to live your word out more fully. You will feel more motivated to act, make changes, and overcome obstacles when you know there are people who are pulling for you and there to encourage you.

Connection: Sharing your word creates a sense of connectedness and community. When you are involved with others who use a word of the year, you may discover that they have the same word as you or similar words as you. They may have ways to use your word that you never thought of. Their stories, perspectives, and insight can inspire you. You will also find new chances to support, learn from and support others, as well as gain these for yourself. Plus, there will be an understanding of what you are trying to do with your word.

Reflection: Sharing your word with others helps you reflect on its significance, meaning, and impact in your life. You can see new perspectives and insights on your word. You can also get feedback about your word and how to better use it. Sharing with others also helps you deepen your relationship with your word. As you discover new ways to think about your word and use it, you can do the same for others, which helps you grow.

Inspiration: Sharing your word with others can inspire them to use a word of the year. A conversation, a reflection, or a transformation may occur in someone else’s life that changes their mindset. You may also feel inspired by what they share with you.

Mindfulness: Sharing your word with others helps you cultivate mindfulness and intentionality. You will become more aware of how you use your word. Also, your awareness of how it influences your choices will become clearer. You will be able to more clearly see how your word aligns with your values. Ultimately, you will become more mindful of how you listen, empathize, and communicate with others.

Sharing your word is a choice. You get to choose who you share it with. You may even keep it to yourself. Whatever you choose, always honor your intentions, boundaries, and values. If you share your word, embrace the benefits of sharing your word. See where your word takes you on this journey.

Remember:

Reflecting on your word of the year is like checking in with yourself, ensuring that you stay on track towards your goals.

Deepening Your Relationship with Your Word of the Year

You have chosen your word. You have incorporated it into your daily life. Now, let’s talk about how to deepen your relationship with your word.

Here are some tips:

Revisit your word: Set aside some time each month and quarter to reflect on your word. Some questions to ponder are: How has my relationship with this world developed? What insights have I gained since I started using the word? How have a imagined my word? Have I seen any new ways to use my words?

Adjust your focus: as you grow and change, your priorities will change. You will have new challenges and obstacles. Do not be afraid to pivot and refocus on your word. You can even explore additional aspects of your word. Some questions to ponder are: How can I apply my word to new areas of my life? How can I use my word to help me overcome any new challenges I am facing? How can I use my word to inspire me to continue on this journey? What can I do to better implement my word in my life? Are there any new areas I can use my word in?

Practice self-compassion: Remember, personal growth is not always direct, a straight line, or even easy. Show yourself some grace. Remember, you will face setbacks, doubts, resistance, and challenges. Use your word as a reminder to practice self-care, self-awareness, and self-compassion. Always be willing to forgive yourself because tomorrow is always a new page on which to write on.

Celebrate your success: When you have a wonderful moment with your word, celebrate your success. No matter how big or small, celebrating successes is a key part of using a word of the year. Use your word to remind you to acknowledge your progress, express some gratitude, and enjoy your accomplishments. Be sure to share your successes with others. This will inspire them to use their word more.

Find a community: be sure to surround yourself with people who love you, support your growth, and will encourage you. Join an online group that will foster your use of your word. As you learn from others, remember to inspire and support them, too.

Renew your commitment: Using a word of the year is not a one-time thing. It is a lifelong practice that will keep you motivated. The more you practice using a word each year, the more it will become a habit in your life. Renew your commitment to use a word each year. Find new ways to use your word and live it. Use your word as a touchstone, guidepost, and source of inspiration for your ongoing transformation and growth.

As you deepen your relationship with your word, you can nurture a sense of purpose, authenticity, and clarity in your life. Your word is not fixed or static. It is a breathing, growing entity in your life. It is a living, breathing expression of your intentions, dreams, and values. Use your word as much as you can. It will grow.

Visit this section of my faith journey blog to get a resource that can help you use your word for the entire year.

Remember:

The power of your word lies not only in its significance but also in your ability to incorporate it into your daily life and track your progress.

Incorporating Your Word of the Year into Your Daily Life

You have chosen a word of the year. Your next step is to make this word a part of your daily life. Here are some practical steps to help you do that:

Set Reminders: Set reminders on your phone or computer to encourage you to think about your word throughout the day. Set a scheduled time to reflect on how you used the word throughout the day, week, or month.

Journal: Writing is a powerful tool for self-reflection. Write about how you interact with your word throughout the day. Write how your word helped motivate you and deal with the challenges you faced throughout the day. What insight did you gain as you thought about your word?

Be sure to keep using the journal you used when you were discovering your word.

Create a routine: Routines help you stay focus, stay on task, cultivate mindfulness, and connect with your intentions. Create a daily, weekly, and monthly routine that includes your word in it.

Visit this section of my faith journey blog to get a resource that can help you use your word for the entire year.

Make it visible: Be sure to surround yourself with reminders of your word. Use it as a password (be creative when you do this), use it as a screensaver by creating some wallpapers for it. Find t-shirts with the word on it or have them made. Use it as a screensaver for your phone. Write it on your calendars, dry erase boards, notebooks, and name tag (use a sticker or sticky note to do this). Choose a color that evokes your word of the year. You can also do this with objects or images. Keep your word visible in all environments that you frequent.

Share your word: Share your word with others. Tell anyone that will listen: your friends, family co-workers about your word and why it matters to you. Join Facebook Groups with other like-minded people who use A Word of the Year. Ask them if they have a word of the year or have ever thought about using one. This is a good way to create a community.

Be flexible: Remember, your word is a tool, not a rule. Do not be rigid or a perfectionist about using your word. Give yourself some grace. Explore, experiment, and change as you go through the year. You may discover something new about yourself and your word.

By using your word every day, you create a deeper connection with the word while deepening the purpose, meaning, and success of using your word. This is a process, not a destination. Be patient, be curious, and be compassionate with yourself as you get in to the routine of using your word daily.

Remember:

By incorporating your word into your daily life, you give yourself a constant reminder of your intentions and purpose.

Discovering Your Word of the Year

So, you are ready to choose a Word of the Year. Here are some steps and tips to help you in this journey:

Get a journal: Be sure to get a journal (spiral or notebook) to write in to keep track of your journey. It does not need to be fancy, just some bound paper and a pen. Keep it with you all the time, so if something inspires you, you can write it down.

Reflect on your past and present: Reflect on your life so far, your current situation, and your goals. What patterns or issues do you see? What words resonate with you? What area(s) of your life do you want to focus on? What do you need to improve in your life?

Brainstorm: Once you have some ideas from the questions above, brainstorm a list of words that speak to your thoughts from above. Write any word that comes to mind. Do not censor yourself. Just let the words flow. If you want to find synonyms and related words, use a thesaurus or dictionary.

Narrow Down the List: Review the list of words and pick the ones that have the most meaning for you. Which ones inspire you? Which ones apply to your life? Look up the definitions and synonyms for those words. Be sure to ask yourself: “Does this word capture the essence of what I want the upcoming year to be?”

Test it out: Think about your top words. Focus on them for a few days. How do they feel when you say them? How do they make you feel when you write them down? Do they connect with your brain, your heart, or your spirit? If you get any insight, emotions, or reactions, write them down in a journal. Be sure to reflect daily on how the word resonates with you. Delete words as you go through this process. Try not to add words, but if an unfamiliar word inspires you, add it to the list.
