30 Day Journal Affirmation Challenge (Day 8) Response
“Be better!” Words that can send anyone into a moment of
anxiety. Yet, these same words can
inspire greatness. And as writers, we
must be better.
Better is defined as “of a more excellent or effective type
or quality.” (Google.com)
Writers must constantly and consistently strive to be better
writers. This requires them to write
everyday so that they can learn their craft and improve their skills. They must also read articles, books, and literature
that helps them write more effectively and proficiently. They must interact with other writers so that
they can get a diverse view of writing and how to write. A willingness to let others read their work
and constructively critique it is vital to becoming better. But, overall, writers must be willing to put in
the work and time and write!
Writers must immerse themselves in language. They need to learn how it sounds, how it
looks, how it works, and how they should use it in their own work. This endeavor is lifelong and should never
stop. Writers must always be striving to
be better.
If writers are still writing in the same way, using the same
methods that they used in their first year of writing in their fifth, fifteenth,
or twentieth year of writing, they have stagnated themselves and chosen to not
be better. Their writing should in some
way be better.
Tony Robbins once said, “By changing nothing, nothing
changes.” Writing is all about change and the changes you make. Growth is about change and the changes you
make, and so is being better.
Most of the time, what keeps us from being better is fear or
being comfortable. Writers have to get
messy and take chances. This is how you
learn what you like and dislike; and what does and does not work for you. It builds character in the writer, so that they
become great. Being better leads to
greatness and being a great writer.
Remember the words of Robert Tew, “Sometimes what you’re
most afraid of doing is the very thing that will set you free.” So, set
yourself free and be better!
